What is depression?

Depression is different from going through a rough time or being sad. It is a serious mental health condition that affects not only your everyday behaviour and thought processes but also your emotions. Symptoms that indicate clinical depression include a feeling of low mood for a long time, feelings of melancholy, or lack of interest for weeks or even months.

Causes of Depression

Primary causes of depression include genetics, neurochemistry, hormonal changes, and psychosocial factors such as stressful life events. Injury, chronic illness, substance abuse, major life changes, such as the death of a loved one, or problems with one's means of subsistence are likely some of the causes.

Symptoms of Depression

Most of the time, depression causes people to feel hopeless and irritable. Other signs may include dramatic mood swings, increased or loss of appetite and energy, sleep disturbances, poor concentration, hopelessness, or excessive guilt, and thoughts about death or suicide.

Depression made me lose touch with the joy in life. No matter how hard I tried, simple daily tasks became overwhelming.

I struggled to find motivation at work, and my relationships crumbled. The heaviness of depression took over my life.

This is not the future I want!

What Can We Do?

Treating depression often requires a combination of therapy, lifestyle adjustments, and sometimes medication. Techniques like regular exercise, mindfulness, maintaining a routine, and spending time with loved ones can make a big difference. CBT, or cognitive behavioural therapy, is well known for being an effective method of treating depression.
